[SBU Board] Kirkwood Trophy

Hi Paulette,

D19 awards the Kirkwood Trophy annually to the D19 player who accumulates the most masterpoints in the District’s regionals. Past winners include Paul Soloway and many other big names. A nameplate engraved with the winner’s name is added to the trophy’s base each year.

However, the trophy has become worn and decrepit over time. The D19 board has decided to “go digital” with the Kirkwood Trophy. This past week at the regional in Victoria, D19 webmaster JP Weber took digital pics of the trophy and will be creating a “digital” Kirkwood Trophy that will be posted on the D19 website and updated with "digital nameplates” with winners’ names going forward.

The trophy itself has thus been orphaned. It is a large piece, with a silver-plated cup atop a wooden base. We will need to decide what to do with it and are open to suggestions.

In the mean time, we had to find a temporary home rather than leave it at the Victoria Convention Centre to be lost or discarded. Matt Smith made an announcement Sunday evening asking if someone would be willing to volunteer to bring the trophy back to Seattle. (I was walking to the Monday morning ferry to Port Angeles already carrying other bridge equipment and thus unable to transport the trophy.) Gary Corbett kindly offered to bring the trophy back to Seattle and take it to EBC. I hope you are OK with housing it at the club for a bit until we decide its ultimate disposition.

EBC’s partnership supporting bridge is greatly appreciated.

Tim
