Folks,

A nomination for the Aileen Osofsky Goodwill Member of the Year award is on tomorrow evening's agenda. Some weeks ago the McCaslins indicated that they, the Godefroys, the Breezes and the Putnams were putting together a nomination for Barbara Nist for the ACBL's Aileen Osofsky Goodwill Member of the Year award and that they intended to provide it to the U446 board for review and submittal. A nomination must be submitted by a Unit or District official in good standing. I asked that they submit the material to the U446 board well in advance of our Sept 11 meeting, but apparently they've been away. This evening I received the email below from the McCaslins.

Nominations must be submitted by Oct 15 using the template at this link:

Prior to tomorrow evening's meeting, please try to visit the nomination template at the link and read the email below.

Thanks,
Tim

> Introductory comments about Barbara, from Beth McCaslin:
> Barbara Nist:
>
> A wonderful lady, great family, fabulous cook.
>
> Quoting Julie and Ole Godefroy: “She has done more than anyone else for Seattle bridge over 40 years"
>
> She always has a welcoming smile for all – old friends and people she meets. She laughs, enjoys life, and makes everyone feel welcome when playing bridge. Her warm personality is what makes her special.
>
> It is our privilege to know her – she deserves to be named Goodwill Member of the Year.
>
>
> Summary of facts about Barbara collected from the Godefroys, Breezes, and McCaslins:
> Organized bridge competition as part of the 1990 international "Goodwill Games" in Seattle, just after the Soviet Union broke up:
> Worked with the ACBL CEO, the Goodwill Games chairman, and the Russian Bridge Federation president to get 26 players to participate from Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, and Siberia
> Overcame players' lack of travel resources by arranging for them to fly with Russian athletes, and found local bridge players to host all players in their homes
> Competition was in a downtown hotel, with commentary broadcast by local experts. Barbara arranged a medal ceremony and wrap-up pool party afterwards
> Organized fund-raisers through the New York Times and local airlines to provide players with transportation home
> Co-chaired two Seattle NABC's: Fall 1993 and Fall 2011
> District 19 Representative to ACBL Board of Directors: years???
> Unit 446 President: years???
> Charity work:
> Organized fund-raising dinner for Tay-Sachs disease, raising $1,200
> Hosted a 24-table game to celebrate a couple's 50th wedding anniversary, baking a huge 3-layer cake
> Has run bridge clubs for ??? years, geared to newer players:
> Includes lunch or dinner (she's an excellent cook who rarely follows recipes). One game a month is "pizza pairs", for which she creates a variety of excellent pizzas from scratch.
> Holds enhanced-MP games whenever possible
> Finds partners (often gold life masters) for new players
> Calls in players to prevent sit-outs.
> Makes players and partners feel welcome; is empathetic and tolerant of their foibles; smiles and laughs a lot
> Partnered with winners of our Unit Games' C-strat, as prizes, for ??? years
