Are us newbies allowed to or encouraged to sit in on meetings before our terms start?

I don't play very many limited games, but fwiw limited boards and lower mps were an issue I and some other players had with sectionals during my first year.

Can discuss more tonight, but I don't think scheduling such that people can't play afternoon and evening if they want to was part of the vote. In fact, I seem to remember that being a specific concern of Ray's and why we weren't going to do a 3:30 afternoon leading into a 7 PM evening.

FWIW I did some research on start times and board. Atlanta has the tightest start times of 10 and 2 and runs 24 boards. Other sectionals w/ 4.5 hour gaps seem to be fine running 27 boards. Something to discuss tonight might be 10:30, 3, and 7:30 vs 10, 2:30 and 7 giving a consistent 4.5 hour gap in between each. Given the fast pairs aspect, 7:30 might still be fine. Another thing to balance: set up being very early if we start at 10 vs people who don't want to drive at night getting out at 6 vs 6:30.

When the board voted at our last meeting to do three sessions Friday, I believe it understood there would be a very challenging line to walk to accommodate setup, traffic, breaks between sessions, director coverage and other constraints. There might even have been an assumption on some folks' part that no one (or very few) who plays the afternoon session would also play the evening session.

We will be making compromises this evening. In doing so, I'd like us to do our best to minimize the number of unintended consequences.

If we cut the boards to less than 24 we will have a riot.

As we wrestle with start times for the three sessions of the Friday of the Sweetheart sectional, Matt has pointed out that we might need to limit the number of boards played in some events, especially for limited events where the pace of play can be slower. We should try to understand whether MP award reductions might kick in if our events do not meet a specified minimum number of boards played. The ACBL Masterpoint Awards regs, link below, specifies 18 boards minimum for certain types of clubs games, but appears to be silent on minimum awards for sectional or other tournament events. I have an email request in to Russ Jones, D10 Director and I believe a member of the ACBL Masterpoint Committee, on this question, see below.

Hi Russ,

(I would normally ask this question of Matt Koltnow, but he is wrapping up the Seaside, OR regional and I need an answer quickly.) I'm U446 (Seattle) President. We have our monthly board meeting this evening and must finalize session times for our Feb sectional so we can get flyers completed and printed to put out at our Oct sectional. I understand you are the expert on MP awards provisions.

In our Feb sectional, for the first time we will be having 3 sessions on Fri. Allowing for set up time Fri AM, and breaks between sessions, this puts the squeeze on session start times. It might be that some sessions (and particularly limited-MP events) might have to be limited to 24 or fewer boards to fit it all in. Is there a minimum number of boards required in open and/or limited-MP events of sectionals in order to avoid a reduction in MP awards?

Thanks,
Tim White
