With significant reluctance, I cast my vote in favor of offering lunch at the Suntan Sectional.
But I agree fully with the views expressed by JC (as I remember them - her message now seems to be lost in the ocean of emails).
I am very sympathetic to her concerns about our making decisions, printing and distributing flyers, advising the ACBL as to our plans, and then changing our minds.
This causes chaos, hurts our credibility, wastes our time as we decide and re-decide issues, costs us money for re-printing flyers, etc.
We should only do it under the most compelling of circumstances.
I do agree that we should be making lunch available at the Suntan Sectional.
We should not have decided otherwise in the first place.
In fact, I don't recall when we decided NOT to do so; and that is surprising, as I am one of the tournament chairs.
In general, in making decisions on all matters - scheduling of tournaments, choosing venues, whether to serve lunch, whatever - we should first gather and consider all the facts, discuss them, and then make our decision, and move on to other matters. We should reconsider and re-decide only if new information, such as scheduling by others of new events beyond our control, makes it imperative for us to re-open our decision.

Folks,
By now everyone should be aware of email traffic concerning lunch plans at Forest Ridge for Sunday Swiss at the upcoming SunTan Sectional. The origin of this was learning from Kim that Forest Ridge is willing (as it did last year) to allow players to participate in its BBQ lunch arrangement. There are widely differing views on this matter and various approaches have been suggested. As a reminder, this situation is a result of two coinciding factors -- the board's decision to suspend the Unit's practice of providing on-site lunches on days of Swiss Teams and the emergence of the lunch opportunity at Forest Ridge. There are various relevant considerations, including the content of the flyer. It would be best to resolve this soon. The intent of this email is to get us on a course leading to near-term resolution.
In considering what I've heard and seen from others, I would like to narrow the solution space to a choice between two approaches: (1) leave matters as they are (i.e. players may bring their own lunches or go out to nearby restaurants), or (2) additionally offer players an opportunity to avail themselves of the Forest Ridge lunch arrangement.
The per person price for the Forest Ridge lunch is something Kim is presently addressing with the Forest Ridge chef. Pricing might depend on the number of pre-committed lunches. According to Kim the menu would include grass fed/nitrate free grilled hot dogs, house made relish/condiments, house made slaw, chips, fruit (most likely watermelon wedges), cookies, and lemonade.
I intend to poll board members via email this Saturday afternoon, May 13 as to their choice of either (1) or (2) above. Choice (1) is self-evident. Choice (2) would unfold along the following lines: the Unit would buy a # of lunch entries from Forest Ridge in advance, thereby making the commitment Forest Ridge would need to a # of lunches. The Unit would then offer these entries/tickets for sale at the tournament on a first-come first-served basis. SunTan sectional email blasts and announcements at the tournament on Friday & Saturday would inform players of the opportunity to purchase the Forest Ridge lunch option; the intent would be to not re-build, re-print or re-distribute the flyer.
I would like to open a period from now through noon Saturday for reflection and expression of views on the matter.
While not addressing this formally in a board meeting, I hope we all can support and live with the process described herein.
Thanks,
Tim
