[SBU Board] Interesting data tidbit - average masterpoints

Tim, JC, et al.

I checked the last member roster I have (dated December 31, 2016) and at that time, the U446 median was 144 MPs. I can't imagine that it would have changed significantly in five months.

  Indeed, helpful insight. Thanks JC.

  Speaking of median…

This link takes one to an ACBL percentile table that suggests the median masterpoint holding for all ACBL members is less than 175 points:
  https://web3.acbl.org/mpholdings

The table here, combined with the understanding that there are presently about 1460 U446 members, suggests a median masterpoint holding in our unit of around 80 (seems low):

However we view these data, they reinforce idea of the huge untapped market (for tournament participation) of Strat C players. It also suggests it would be appropriate to encourage Strat C / NLM unit members to run for the board. Toward this idea, Ray mentioned in Victoria that Pam Gibson had at one point indicated she might run. I ran into Pam at the table a couple of weeks ago and asked her. She said she would consider this, but not until after her retirement. Let's give thought to Strat C players who would be good candidates for the board and encourage them to run -- now is the right timing for this.

Very interesting, JC – and helpful for us in keeping perspective as to who our “constituency” is.

I am surprised that the “average” master point total in our unit is as high as 710.
Perhaps this is another “mean vs. median” issue, and 710 is the mean.
Can you, without a lot of time and effort, come up with a median level, or even break it down into three or four brackets?

    Thanks!

The average masterpoint total (per member) for our unit board as of last month's reckoning is 2325. (Admittedly, there's one masterful player on our board who is an outlier :D ...if we kick that certain someone out of the average, it goes down to 1551 for the board.)

The average masterpoint total per member for our unit is 710.

The average masterpoint total per member for our district is 676.

I can't as easily get to the average masterpoint total per member for the ACBL as a whole, but I'm assured it's lower than our district's.

Just some food for thought! (I was playing with the data for our Build the Unit committee and figured I'd check this at the same time for fun. Yes, this is what I do for fun. Don't judge me! :D )

    Cheers,
    JC
