[SBU Board] FW: Seattle NextGenBridge players coming to Bothell

I want to make it clear that I am 100% in favor of supporting youth bridge.
I want to do everything we reasonably can to ensure that these kids have a
great time. Let's really make them feel welcome, and send them home with
bridge trinkets, a group photo, and a personal invitation to come back and
play at our tournaments in the future.
That said, I'm not sure that adding a junior section to the upcoming
sectional is the right way to do it. The events were decided on months ago,
the flyers are ready, and staffing decisions have been made. Also, we were
clear at the last meeting that we aren't changing the event schedule to add
a 0-750 swiss - if there's enough interest in that, great, we'll reassess
our event schedule and add it to a future tournament. It seems out of line
with that decision if we, in March, decide to significantly modify the
events for the May sectional in order to add a youth section.
I don't subscribe to the school of thought of "well, that's how it's always
been done" - if the board thinks that it's right to add a youth section,
let's do it. However, we should consider whether it's really necessary. In
what way will either the youth or the novice game be better off with a
separate kids section?
Ann Farmer contacted McKenzie directly with the same text she sent to Tim,
and his belief is that a combined youth/novice section would be fine.
If we're going to make the decision to add a youth section, it seems like
something we should do immediately (rather than waiting three weeks), so
that we can update the flyers accordingly. Perhaps we should discuss this
via email rather than at the next board meeting. I'm not sure what more Ann
Farmer would add in person about whether to add a youth section than she's
said via email.
