Maybe I should invite Susan to accompany me, or me and Ann, on the hot
summer day visits to MIHS and to Forest Ridge.

2016

Thanks folks for the responses thus far.

In his response noting that IN sectional sanctions do not count against the
allotment, Matt raised an intriguing idea -- the possibility of an IN
regional, which unlike the past can now offer 5% gold for some events. This
would require district approval. I would like to ask that this topic please
be included on the agenda of an upcoming Unit board meeting so we could
initiate discussion of the idea.

Re Susan's comments -- the committee is sensitive to the issue of summer
heat. During last night's meeting we again visited the very difficult
situation at Shoreline a few years ago when a number of people became ill
and/or went home because of the heat. Our proposed use of Forest Ridge's
gym and MIHS Upper Commons is conditioned upon a site visit this coming
summer during a period of high heat. John W has agreed to take this field
trip on to gauge the temperatures, and consideration will also be given to
the added effect of the presence of people in numbers typical of a sectional
session. If the board were to rule out all non-A/C'ed venues for summer
sectionals, that would effectively eliminate most if not all schools from
consideration for any full (3-day) sectional. The committee feels the
proposed use of Forest Ridge and MIHS should be approved by the board, so
long as the results of the field trip indicate the temperatures would be OK.
I think we now need the full
board to rule on whether we are going to adopt of policy of no summer
sectionals in non-A/C'ed venues; the committee would greatly appreciate a
ruling on this soon. A possibility, if the board is so inclined, would be
to seek to hire a professional engineering consultant to evaluate the
thermal properties and conditions at each school and to calculate estimated
peak temperatures during a session on a hot summer day following a soak-out
period of several days.

Any additional comments would also be welcome.

Thanks,
Tim
