When you say "upgrade" did you do the in-place upgrade from 14->16->20
or wipe & re-install?
I've been running Ubuntu on quite a number of systems since 2004 and
I've seen (relatively rare) occasions where an in-place upgrade would
seem to proceed normally but the system just wasn't stable afterwards.
Symptoms varied. But a wipe & reload would cure it completely.
If you haven't done that, I recommend trying that next.
