FYI, iPhones from Verizon at least as old as my iPhone 6 Plus
work fine without modifications. Verizon has a global option
that charges $10.00 a day for any day in which one uses either
voice or data with no other charges assuming one doesn't exceed
the normal plan limits. There may be less expensive ways to do
this, but I chose this as business calls would come through
without having to do anything special.

The coverage in Kakadu was OK when in one of the resort towns,
and paid WiFi was available where we stayed.

I found that Waze was pretty useless in Kakadu as the maps were
inaccurate. Apple's Map.app worked well.
