When we were doing major scanning we used pretty high-end Ricoh
scanners (my only venture into Linux kernel hacking was to get
the SCSI drivers to handle the Ricoh ADF).

I have been using a ScanJet 5590 in-house for a year or so, but I
wouldn't call it suitable for high-volume work. It has a bit of
a habit of jamming when using the ADF in duplex mode.

HP has been horrible about supporting older hardware, or even
some current hardware as they didn't provide drivers for the 5590
for Apple's Snow Leopard for about 9 months after Snow Leopard
was released.

We are using the VueScan software which supports an incredible
number of scanners, and works the same on a variety of platforms
including Linux, Windows, and OS X. Their tech support as been
as good as any I've seen.

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of
one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that
oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the
beginning if it is to be stopped at all. -- H. L. Mencken
