Tony,

I imagine that you are using udev to manage all of your device entries. IIANM 
all of the modern distributions have switched to udev over the past several 
years. Instead of using MAKEDEV to create new /dev entries you edit rules in 
/etc/udev. I think MAKEDEV still will work, but changes will be lost after the 
first reboot.
