I've seen this behavior on occasion, but only with USB modems that
have the software inside. They "stick" in hard drive mode. Have you
tried to remove/reinstall the usb device drivers?
Kinda inconvenient unplugging them if you're miles away or the plug is
in an inconvenient place.
