Debian Lenny, both for servers & for desktops.

I don't have an opinion about Ubuntu as I've never tried it, but I don't see 
how it could get much easier to maintain a pure Debian system. The 
file, /etc/sources.list, is created automatically during the install and all 
you have to do is run aptitude update & aptitude safe-upgrade once a week or 
so. In fact, you even can set it up as a cron job.

I prefer KDE, but that's like saying I prefer strawberry to your chocolate -- 
personal taste. ;-)
