Well, that only took me most of the day.

Running the X line from a different host allowed me to watch the
screen as a new error message not previously seen reared its ugly
head: config/hal: couldn't initialise [sic] context (null) ((null)).

So hal was the culprit (or rather lack of hal).  After installing hal,
I found the problem persisted, but also noted hal had not started.
Once hal was running, all was well.  Now why did I need hal at the lab
and not at my house.  Oh well, one mystery at a time.
