[OT]: software signal generator

I have been looking for software to create data that I can use to test
various digital filters. I have the filters. But I want to set up a nice
way to document how they act in various situations. I am looking at
things like being able to specify various wavelengths that should be
present in the data, The data will, of course, contain more than just
these wavelengths.

I seem to be looking in all the wrong places. Given the makeup of this
group, I am guessing that someone else may have come across such code.

Any pointers?
