I'm not sure what the situation is like in the US or Europe, but here in Asia, it used to be that you could easily find people well-versed in Microsoft technologies (yeah, maybe that's an oxymoron), so going with Exchange makes sense from a support perspective (i.e. if you want to be able to find someone who can fix your server without having to pay too much). That situation seems to have changed recently, at least in the small corner of Asia where I live and work. Now it is tough to find *anyone* who can competently manage AD, install Windows Server 200x, much less setup, maintain or troubleshoot Exchange. The 3 R's of Microsoft: Reboot, re-format, re-install; well, they don't work so well now. I see lots of engineers who ONLY know the 3R's ... and the "Next>Next>Next" culture (i.e. the culture that says, just accept the defaults), and I find it both sad and sickening to watch.
