Yes.  Clearly you would need a mountain bike with good gears if you get 
off the Embarcadero.  Lots of horror stories about local bike delivery 
people getting munched by cars.  The City can be tricky because of the 
one-way streets, the cable car tracks (slippery).  There is a famous 
mass bike ride event Critical Mass that starts from near where you were 
(Market and Embarcadero) last Fri of every month at 6:00 PM to celebrate 
biking and advocate for rights of cyclists in the City.

We need to give you a tour next time you're in town!  A drive up Gough 
or Divisadero will "inform" you about the hills in SF.
