I must tell you that only the tourists go to Fisherman's Wharf.

We *do* go down to the new market-like area down at the Ferry Building 
which is several piers south-east of pier 39.

You can ride your bike from wherever you are in town right over to the 
Embarcardero and then take the Embarcadero around past Fisherman's 
Wharf, through Ft. Mason, through Crissy Field, and then on to Ft. Point 
and the Presidio.  It keeps you from having to try to ride over the 
hills in SF to get to the Bridge.

"Downtown", presumably in the Financial District, is not that far from 
Fisherman's Wharf by bike.  Stay off the hills and stay on the 
Embarcadero and you will avoid impossible hill climbing.
