At some point for about 6 weeks, X was hosed (at least in Debian) such
that everything seemed slow -- games (my kids were crying about
openarena), rdesktop, various other video intensive things.  The right
update fixed it.  Not sure what it was, but perhaps check for updates
to Slack?
