You might want to look at VueScan which is quite a easy to use GUI that
works on Mac, Linux, and I think the Microsoft Virus.
The UI is the same on all platforms, and it supports an incredible number
of scanners. I bought it for my Mac Mini after a hard drive crash lost the
HP drivers, and HP no longer provided drivers for the $500 ScanJet with ADF
I had been using for years. It Just Worked(tm) when I plugged a Nikon
slide/film scanner, and a new HP ScanJet I bought recently when the old one
went Tango Uniform.
The biggest problem with CLI scanning is that it often requires editing the
resulting images to crop them properly while this can be done easily on a
GUI scanning program.

The stamping of paper is an operation so much easier than the laying of
taxes, that a government, in the practice of paper emissions, would rarely
fail, in any such emergency [such as an election], to indulge itself too
far in the employment of that resource... -- Alexander Hamilton
