This is certainly possible using the CLI sane commands. We did
extensive work with CLI stuff using the Vividata scanning and OCR
software about 10 years ago, using a perl::Tk interface to
control high-end Ricoh scanners (the only time I ever had to
modify Linux kernel modules was to get them to recognize the
Ricoh ADF responses).
