I don't have a dog in this fight, i.e. don't own shares in either IBM or 
SUN.  I suspect this is what is refered to in ancient military texts as 
a "demonstration in front of the enemy."  Corporations these days are 
very wary of shareholders'  agitation and  fears, so I suspect this is 
a  "demonstration" by IBM to see if there is a way to energize stock 
purchases.  The report's mentioning that these talks could break off at 
any time suggests to me this is somewhat short of serious at this point.
