I compile my own, that's where it came from. Before you beat me... this same
exact kernel and it's associate .config boot perfectly ok off my laptops hard
drive. Moving the exact same setup to the usb stick and boot it via grub,
fails unless I use the initrd method.
What is it about usb sticks that require the use of initrd/initfs to boot
linux? That's what I haven't figured out. Booting into a kernel in /boot
fails just as the kernel access the file system for the first time... unable
to mount VFS... However the same exact kernel/modules stuffed into an inird
works perfectly...
