What is your CPU?  Check the maufacturer's website for known harware bugs.

I think your "fails" are BIOS settings.  It's been a while, but IIRC the 
memory hole is reserved for copying the BIOS for fast access and dates 
back to the good ol' DOS expanded and extended memory management.
