I have just installed ubuntu jaunty jackalope on my PC and can't get the
NVIDIA drivers to load.
I installed server, then added gnome-desktop. If I go into "add drivers"
NVIDIA shows up. I click on install, and I get a text box showing the
drivers were installed, but a reboot fails to load the GUI.
I did some research and downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.14-pkg2.run
and ran it.
I accept the license, then get an error: No precompiled kernel interface was
found to match your kernel; would you like to [get it from
ftp://download.nvidia.com]?
I reply Yes, and get "No matching precompiled kernel interface was found on
the NVIDIA FTP site; this means that the installer will need to compile a
kernel interface for your kernel"
So I click OK and get yet another error. "Unable to find the kernel source
tree for the currently running kernel."...
Then it talks abut getting the kernel for RedHat RPMs.
I have never build a kernel or customized linux. I'm totally lost.
I tried several other things I found doing google searches, including "sudo
apt-get install
nvidia-graphics-drivers-180<https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-180/180.44-0ubuntu1>"
and get E: Couldn't find package nvidia-graphics-drivers-180.
Can someone help a neophite?
If I can't get this driver loaded, can I use my video in a resolution better
than 1024x768?
lspci shows I have a "VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce
6100 nForce 405 (rev a2)
What other information will help you?
