As Lonni already has pointed out my experience with Debian likely will not be
the same as yours with FC10. As you can see from my sig I'm still running the
stable version of Debian (& waiting, & waiting for the testing version to
become released as stable). Also, I don't recall that you ever mentioned
which desktop environment you were using. I'm using KDE v3.5.5 (I know that
Lonni doesn't like KDE either ;-) which uses the aRts sound server. (I
understand that that is going away in KDE v4.x, thank goodness.)
So, originally, it was KDE talking to aRts talking to ALSA and installing the
Pulseaudio software made it KDE talking to aRts talking to Pulseaudio talking
to ALSA. (Using the Gnome desktop environment or KDE4 should make it simpler
by eliminating aRts.) After removing the Pulseaudio packages
& /etc/asound.conf I just reverted back to the original system.
