FC10 - no sound

No kidding - I totally agree.  ALSA was absolutely fine.  Sheesh. I 
think Ubuntu has made the same grievous mistake!

When I try to run alsamixer as myself or root I get:
ALSA lib pulse.c:266:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: 
Connection refused

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: Connection refused
