I would still think about running shorewall... which is just a firewall,  on a 
machine running Linux....

I have an old AMD machine  (768MB)  running a version of kubuntu with 
shorewall.   So it becomes my  firewall, router, spam processor, and email 
fetcher  for about 4 other machines on the network.

Would save you a lot of figuring as to what this 'new' smoothwall OS is doing 
for or to you...   (but I'm not trying to put down smoothwall - - I've never 
used it)
