Surprisingly enough, must of the skilled Linux types in our local
group are died-in-the-wool Ubuntu freaks. It does work well for most
beginners. All in all I agree with you. Having gone through the test
process once or twice, I'm not impressed by starting over every few
months with borken packages from the experimental/unstable
repositories plus a few wild-haired ideas. Having seen that live, I'm
amazed that anything ever works.
I'm also underwhelmed by the lack of feedback from Ubuntu into Debian.
At least Fedora/RH contribute a lot to the wider community.
