Sounds like you need to do some research on the OSI (Open Systems 
Interconnect) model.

I use a pneumonic to get the first letters.

All people some times need data processing.

Application
Presentation
Session
Transport
Network
Data Link
Physical

And then once you have the OSI model down you can move on to the RFC's 
on how TCP/IP packets are constructed....
