Message two about vmnetcfg (vmware-netcfg on Linux) was the answer. I
could change the device that was used with the Bridge from automatic to
eth0, Now the request goes out.

Of course, I still need to get the d*mn*d corporate XP installed via
this method. And something is not happy. Plod on...
