up2date conflict

When I run up2date -u on my server RHEL4, I got the following error, 
even with --force and the up2date configuration has "Force To Install", too.

[[root at jetco ~]# up2date -u --force

Fetching Obsoletes list for channel: rhel-i386-es-4...

Testing package set / solving RPM inter-dependencies...

RPM package conflict error.  The message was:
Test install failed because of package conflicts:
package perl-5.8.5-36.el4_6.3 is already installed


I am thinking of unstalling the package perl with "rpm -e --force" but 
would like to know your advice first.
