I've run into similar problems installing GRUB in the distro's 
superblock so I can chainload it from another GRUB install.
The last time was with Debian 4.  I discovered that syntax "grub-install 
/dev/hdxy " works while syntax "grub-install (hdx.y)" seems to fail 
installing GRUB in the indicated partition superblock.
