We're coming into the season of major wind storms here in the Pacific
Northwest. December of 3006 we were without power for 7 days, and many
with Comcast cable were out for a week after that. Our voice and T1 were
never down during this period, something to think about before going with
the local cable company for phone service.

When trees hit houses here on Mercer Island, they tend to cut the house in
half as it's heavily wooded with massive tall trees. So far we have been
lucky as the closest call we've had in the 25 years I've been on the island
occurred when a tree came down across our garage, but broke on an old Ford
pickup that was parked next to the garage, only taking out a corner of the
roof of the garage. The roof of the pickup was quite a bit lower than it
had been, but I only had a couple hundred bucks in it, keeping it around
for dump runs and such.

We were without power for 5 days in the 1991 Clinton Inaugural
wind storm, with all the roads around our house blocked by
fallen trees. I walked through the woods to meet a friend while
the wind was at its peak. It's pretty scarey hearing large trees
crashing nearby.

Tomorrow I go fill all my gas cans for the generator so I'm ready
for the next power outage. Gas at Costco today was $1.899 USD,
the lowest I've seen it in seen it in quite a while. I never
thought I would be able to fill it for under $30.00 again.
