Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. I can mount the vfat partition
on linux. Maybe I should put a vfat fs on the first partition, rather
than on the second. OTOH, we're talking about inexpensive pens.
Perhaps I should get another one just for the few times I have to
interact with a computer running CrappyOS and just use it as it comes
out of the box (it's just that it lets a kind of defeat taste in the
mouth...).
I'll try all your suggestions next week (until then I don't have easy
access to a computer running that kind of OS...)

I seem to remember that I wiped out the first sector of the pen (with
dd) before making the current partitions. The thing was not working
well, and I thought that some Windows-related crap put there by the
manufacturer might be the culprit (it wasn't: I had a faulty PCI USB
card...). So, maybe I wiped out something needed by autistic OSs,
after all?
