We have been using courier-authlib and courier-imap for years,
largely because it scales very well in large installations.

Shameless plug, see the Atramax servers I've developed and being
marketed by one of our larger ISP customers.  They have the
complete horde/imp/kronolith/et al packages, along with postfix,
amavisd, clamav, spamassassin, etc., etc., etc.
