The Linksys VPNs I've used (BEFVP41s primarily) use IPSec.

I am not familiar with Slackware, but the current method of handling IPSec
on 2.6 kernels seems to be ipsec-tools racoon.  FreeS/WAN was often used on
2.4 and perhaps earlier kernels.
