I've seen that crapage before.  That's a WinXP installer bug.
Whenever the installer encounters a disk that has a partition table
with 'unknown' partition types, it hangs at a dark screen.  unknown in
this case is linux partitions, or even no partition table at all.  I'm
not sure how this could happen with vmware though.
