There was a bug recently (kernel? xorg? can't remember) that caused
the num lock light to be non functional (status did not change) but
the numpad was actually enabled/disabled when the num lock button was
toggled.

This was fixed fairly rapidly on sidux (Debian sid level),  but I
don't know about Ubuntu 7.10. I'll dig back into the forum to see if I
can find more details.
