I frequently use knoppix live CDs to probe unfamiliar hardware to
figure out what modules are necessary for various devices.

Graphics usually isn't much of a problem as the majority of our
Linux boxes are servers running in init state 3.  If they have
problems with on-board video, and we want to use init 5 for
initial setup, configuring with a generic video card works well
enough for basic GUI stuff (certainly not for fancy desktops, but
we use Macs for that :-).
