I had another experience. I built my new desktop with an Intel Quad. It
worked fine with 4G then I decided to add another 4G. And it was when
the problem started. The motherboard has 4 memory slots and I have 2G
chip for each slot. All four are identical chips. But no matter how I
changed the BIOS setup for memory settings, whenever I put 8G in, the
system worked for about an hour then died. Tried with Linux and Windows.
And worked just fine with 4G.

Finally I paid attention that this motherboard has the PCI Express slot
for the video card is a little bit close to the memory slots and the
nvidia card I has is a littble hot. So I put a fan blowing air to that
area and, voila, the system was up for long time without any problem.

It was just too hot in that area when I had 8G. An add-on fan fixed that
problem.
