We had a similar issue at a coal mine I worked at. A lightning strike 
hit one demountable building (you know the nice metal ones) and then the 
current radiated out along the ethernet cabling and blew groups of ports 
in each switch in the other buildings. It didn't blow the entire switch 
just the ports that had a common weak component the rest were fine.
