I installed Xubuntu on the PC my grandson uses. After frequent warnings
about Limewire and dangerous downloading habits, a third episode of serious
problems was the last straw.

I was uneasy about the switch because I could not get wireless networking to
work in Ubuntu and SUSE earlier this year; so my PC's still run FreeBSD.

My first attempt was Ubuntu 8.10. Things went well until I performed the
first update. After rebooting, the GUI was completely hosed. This was
really disappointing (not the word I used at the time).

My second attempt was Xubuntu 8.10. I know: Why try a distro with the same
broken base? I don't know.

Wow. Everything is working. Wireless with WPA2/PSK is working. The HP
Photosmart C4180's printer is working. The C4180's scanner is working with
xsane. You Linux users may take this for granted; buth with most of the
inexpensive printers going the "all-in-one" route, having HPLIP working is a
big deal to FreeBSD users.

The first update has come and gone without a hitch. The restricted software
for dvd watching/mp3 stuff was available in one metapackage.

Woohoo!
