My first experience with configuring kppp was with Caldera eDesk 2.4. I
remember I was apprehensive, but I just followed the instructions in the
excellent printed manual that came with eDesk 2.4 and it worked. From
then on I found no difficulty with Kppp (other than, as I mentioned,
with Corel Linux - a Debian based distro - and Debian 4.0) but rather
found configuring Netscape/Mozilla to set up e-mail much more elaborate.
Libranet Debian was also a delight, owing to its Adminmenu - a
collection of Perl scripts - that had a simple and elegant dialup
configuration. (Sigh)
