Sorry for coming to this reply late. There are actually several Linux
distros that will run from floppy and support 486 CPU with as little
as 16Mb of RAM. Of course you're going to get various levels of
support and development on these minimal machines. I've played with
DSL and Puppy booting from USB. Some don't even need a HD and run
from floppies, it's been years since I've done that though.
