Bizarre autologout problem

Folks,

During the past two weeks while school down here had a break, I
upgraded the server.  Since the upgrade (Debian testing/lenny), users
whose logins are numbers are logging in and within 3-5 seconds are
logged out.  This happens at a low level, as I can see it happen if I
su - $user as root.  About 3-5 seconds after getting a good login
where I can list the directory, etc., I am logged out.

This only happens with numbered login account, otherwise identical
login accounts that are names (alphas perhaps with a trailing number)
are unaffected.

Not sure what might be doing this.  Nothing in the logs -- auth.log
shows the login was accepted.
