firefox and plugins

I have continual grief with plugins on Firefox.

The good folks at Ubuntu are totem bigots. I have no problem with
that, but totem has never worked worth a c**p for me.

I use mplayer which nearly always works, although they do manage to
screw it up from time to time during the development cycle.

The problem is that Firefox always gives preference to totem if its
plugins are registered. So, after every maintenance cycle, I have to
whack the plugin links for libtotem* before I can watch movie
trailers.

Does anyone know a permanent solution, ie a way to persuade Firefox
that mplayer is my preferred choice for movie type things?
