I use screen.  I also install gpm (general purpose mouse, not the gnu
math library).  But neither of these actually puts multiple screens on
one display so that you can easily move from one to the other.

screen allows me to start something on a remote system, detach, and
reattach later from a different place.

gpm allows use of a mouse on a tty -- not as useful except when I ssh
into my radios that have a readline/mouse interface.

multiple xterms on a screen are very useful -- not just for cut and
paste, but a number of other things, like monitoring multiple remote
systems at the same time (two ends of a radio link, etc.).
