Yup, once you achieve "vintage" you need to keep still in a cool place.
The observation that things take 5 times longer is true, but the reason
is not antiquity, but modernity.
Case study: my old vacuum cleaner stopped sucking and started to blow
smoke. As I usually do in such unpleasant circumstances (need to
purchase new household appliances) I consulted my Consumer Reports book,
noted the most highly rated models, and went looking. I was appalled to
see how flimsy these things are. Who on earth will spend over $500 for
one of those plastic things that looks more like a Russian Energa rocket
than a vacuum cleaner? I found the Consumer Reports "best buy" at
Lowe's, but all they had in stock was the display. Next to it at half
the price was a bagless version, so I bought it. I figured I'd save
money both in initial cost and not having to buy bags.
Well, the new vacuum works all right, but I calculate I need to spend 5
times as long as I vacuum for emptying the bin and servicing its various
filters.
