running vmware without X on the host

Anyone here have any experience running VMware-workstation on a Linux
host that does *NOT* have X installed?

Yes, I know that most people think of a workstation as something with
X, but I'm trying to do without X, and sadly vmware is a GTK app.  I'm
trying to find a way to spawn a guest OS without X anywhere.
